Football Falls In INSC Opener

LAKEVILLE - In a rivalry game between Bremen and LaVille, throw out the records and any state rankings, and be prepared for an exciting final play of the ballgame. It was yet another one-point thriller, 7-6, as Friday's conference football opener for both teams at Lancer Field showcased the respective defenses and decided by turnovers and special teams play. It was the ninth one possession since 2003. After three non-conference games to open the season, LaVille scored first in its Homecoming 2025 home game, but it was Bremen that escaped from the place that hadn't witnessed a Lions victory since September 21, 2012. Execution was the main order, with a side of which team played with less turnovers. "We felt our scouting report matched what they were doing on Friday night," said LaVille coach Jeff Kaiser. "Tendencies were there, Bremen just out executed us at crucial times." The Lancers were poised to get on the board first after the Blue Crew Defense forced the Lions to punt. Brayden Schwitz helped lead a drive that got LaVille inside the Bremen 10-yard line. Then on a 2nd-and-2 from the eight, Bremen's Jack Wildauer stepped in front of LaVille's Konnor Amor inside the five for the first turnover of the game. LaVille defense held on three plays and forced the Lions to punt deep in their own territory. That's when the Lancers used great field position to get the first score. Schwitz found tight end Noah Menis on a short little seam pattern, caught the football, broke a tackle and carried a BHS defender across the goal line to make it 6-0 LaVille. After a delay of game penalty on LHS, that pushed the Lakeville hosts back five yards and Bremen's Logan Frederickson blocked the point-after attempt. Coach Jeff Kaiser's club retained the 6-0 lead until right before halftime. Following a 40 yard punt by LaVille, Wildauer returned the ball 59 yards to help shift momentum and put the visitors in scoring position with plenty of time on the clock. After four plays, Wildauer found sophomore Jace Pippenger open for an 18-yard TD pass to tie the game at 6-6. Wildauer then added the all-important PAT for what ended up being the winning point. In the third quarter, Kaiser's crew moved the ball inside Bremen territory, highlighted by a huge pitch and catch from Schwitz to Cole Stafford for 55 yards. On the next play, however, the Lancers were trying to fight for extra yardage and fumbled the football. The Lions ended up controlling the clock on a 14-play drive that covered the minute-plus of the third and more than half of the fourth quarter clock before the Blue Crew defense held Bremen on downs with 5:12 left in the game. Schwitz and the Lancer offense moved the ball for six plays before Wildauer completed a very busy night with his second interception. "We were able to move the ball at times, but we were not consistent in doing so," said Kaiser. "We had some turnovers that if we eliminate those, I feel the outcome could have been different. Defense we played well enough to win by holding an opponent to 7 points, but when you aren't putting points on the board you aren't going to win many games." When asked about Wildauer's effort, Kaiser said, "(He) showed his senior leadership and abilities to make plays. That's what you expect from your seniors. Big plays at key times." Statistically, the two INSC schools finished pretty even - 13 first downs each, only four penalties combined (all by LaVille), similar passing stats (85-65 LaVille), Bremen a slight edge in rushing yards, but according to Kaiser, "The difference in the game was they won the battle in the trench, won the turnover number and out executed us on special teams." LaVille had two interceptions, a fumble, a blocked PAT and three punts. "Offensively we had moments. Until we can move the ball on the ground consistently though, it's going to be a struggle to manage the game how we need to with a balanced attack." Kaiser's crew moves to 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the INSC. The Lancers will travel to Tippecanoe Valley (2-2/0-1) September 19 for a 7pm kick. "Whether we win or lose there are always things to work on," concluded the LaVille coach. "We will continue to work on things we are struggling with, iron out the details and get to work as we prepare for the next opponent. This week we need to focus on us and what we need to improve on by Friday night to have success against Valley." Bremen 7 LaVille 6 At Lancer Field, Lakeville, IN.
