SOUTH BEND - Just when it looked like Marquette Catholic and LaVille were headed to extra time, the #11 Lancers found the back of the net. It was an instant classic as both teams stepped up defensively in a 1-0 Lancer victory in the IHSAA Class 1A Sectional quarterfinal. Lucas Maenhout scored for the Lancers off a shot from just outside the box. His attempt lodged into the top right corner of the net with 2:31 left in regulation. For 78 minutes, defense was the name of the game - until Maenhout's match-winning goal. We had a chance to chat with Maenhout about what he saw on that play. "I saw Luis dribbling out," said the sophomore midfielder. "I was going to go behind the defense but they already cut me off. I cut back in front and Luis passed the ball. Then I saw the middle was wide open so I took the space and saw that the goal was open. I took the shot and prayed ... and it went in the top right corner. "It went over his (goalies) fingertips. He might have been able to knock it down if he jumped higher. It was a tough shot to save." The LaVille defense then kept the Blazers' offense at bay to secure the victory and move to the October 7 semifinal. The match is scheduled to begin at 5:00 PM EDT. "The defense kept getting pressure the whole game," Maenhout said about the Lancer defensive unit. "They handled it very well by clearing the ball and possessing it out wide. They did a good job to get it up for the attackers to make a threat. There were a few scary moments where they got behind the back line, but we were a little faster." Marquette had a key moment when Soren Christensen's shot hit the crossbar with a lobbed shot in the 10th minute. LHS will have another test Wednesday, Oct 7, 2026, in the first semifinal match against the host Titans. "They are big and aggressive," Maenhout said when asked about Trinity Academy, who leads the recent series 3-1. "So far, we have handled the size differences in matches. We have had a chance to look at them and they like to send the ball. There will be a lot of tracking on defense." Marquette had their best scoring chance in the 10th minute when junior Soren Christensen lobbed a shot over the LaVille keeper that rang off the crossbar. Senior goalkeeper Sean Triemstra corralled three first-half saves to keep it a 0-0 contest after 40 minutes. It was the ninth shutout for LaVille so far this season. The only Lancer victory against Trinity Academy came on Aug 16, 2018 by a 3-1 count in a match played at Newton Park.
