LAKEVILLE - What has been a long time coming could possibly be the starting point for something bigger for the LaVille boys soccer program. For the first time, the Lancer boys soccer team hosted a LaVille alumni vs. the present-day LHS match at Newton Park. It was the first match during a boy-girl alumni doubleheader July 24, 2026. We had a chance to chat with current boys head soccer coach Keith Norman following the 6:30pm match Friday in Lakeville. "Our first-ever Alumni Soccer Match brought together former players, current players, families, and supporters for an evening that celebrated the past while investing in the future," said Norman. "In a small working-class community, traditions don't build themselves — they are created by people who care enough to come back, give their time, and be part of something larger than themselves." The late-July weather was perfect, while, "the match was filled with competitive moments, plenty of laughs, and reminders that once you're part of this program, you're always part of this family. Former players enjoyed the opportunity to lace up their boots again, while current players had the chance to compete alongside those who helped build the foundation before them." Coach Norman was quick to point out this match, "more importantly, reinforced the culture we are working to create — a culture where competitiveness is matched by belief, accountability, and a genuine connection to our community. Success isn't measured only by wins and losses, but by building relationships that span generations and creating a program that players want to return to long after graduation. "A sincere thank you goes out to every alumnus, current player, family member, and volunteer who made this event possible. Your support demonstrated what can happen when a community rallies around its young people." As we closed our chat, Norman explained, "The final whistle marked the end of a soccer game, but it may have been the beginning of something much bigger for our program. This was our first Alumni Soccer Match, but if the enthusiasm and turnout were any indication, it certainly won't be our last. Traditions begin with one step, and this was a great first step toward building a program and a community that everyone can be proud of. It was memorable." After a second IHSAA moratorium week July 27-August 2, the fall soccer season officially begins Monday, August 3. The boys soccer team is set to play host to the South Bend Navigators in a scrimmage on Tuesday, August 11 at 6:00pm at Newton Park. Westville is set to visit Newton Park on August 19, 5:30pm in the season-opener.
