(Part 2 of 2) LAKEVILLE - Today we close our interview with LaVille athletic director Will Hostrawser, we continue our chat with the coach/administrator. In part one, we chatted about the journey from the start. In this portion, he shares about the covid pandemic, memories and fond moments while serving as the Lancer athletic boss. Along with the daily happenings inside LaVille Athletics, the 2019-20 school year and athletic season took shape. The corona virus became the latest opponent of LaVille student-athletes, and the world. We asked Hostrawser about how covid affected not just athletic events, but the student-athletes, teams and coaches, along with meetings not just the state, but the conference and locally. "Covid was one of the hardest things to navigate as an AD because you could not prepare for it ahead of time," said Hostrawser. "No one was sure about what the true dangers were and many people believed different things. There was not a lot of consistent guidance from county to county which put school administrators in a tough spot and caused a lot of unrest leading to emotions frequently boiling over. Through it all, I tried to stay focused on one thing - giving our student-athletes the safest environment to get in as many games as we could while keeping the coaches as safe and comfortable as possible too. As a coach, it was extremely difficult because you never knew who you had available due to contact tracing. "Meetings turned into virtual meetings using the zoom platform. I really paid attention to my surroundings to keep myself safe so I could continue to work at procuring safe environments for our players, coaches and fans. I wanted to salvage their high school experience as much as I could given the framework in which to work - which seemed very fluid. It put a lot of stress on a lot of people - but we managed to navigate through it all." We had the chance to ask the longtime LaVille athletic administrator what he felt was the best thing that came out of covid. "The virtual meeting platform - zoom and google meet," he said. "The ability to live webcast games so people could watch events from afar. The implementation of digital ticketing. The Implementation of credit card readers. Increased communication between coaches, players and parents via new channels." We also were able to ask Hostrawser about some special moments and memories while coaching football at LaVille: "Special moments - I have many... *When Tammie Radican awarded the Unified Athletes letterman jackets and the interaction of the students with them - including them in after school activities. *Hosting the Everwise Bi-County annually - the drama, the communities, the 50th anniversary teams - watching *LaVille win the boys and girls tournaments... it is just an amazing event! *Hosting the IHSAA tournament events - soccer sectional, regional and north semi-state, volleyball sectional and regional, football sectional, girls and boys basketball sectionals, softball sectional, regional and north semi-state, baseball sectional *Hosting track meets and wrestling super duals *Watching our teams compete with confidence and win games we didn't think we could win *Having coaching staff meetings and the interactions with the coaching staff members *Working with officials in all the sports "Fond memories as a coach at LaVille, *The look on the players' faces after we shut out South Central in our first game when I was the head football coach in 2013. *The community support when we played for sectional titles. *Finally beating Bremen for homecoming in 2014 - and not ever losing to them again while I was coaching. *Watching Ethan Kertai return a punt for a touchdown with not one block thrown. *Playing in Notre Dame Stadium during the Notre Dame 7 on 7 tournament and winning it all. *Winning the football game against Triton during covid when we played only 13 guys against their full team. *Converting an impossible 4th and 21 in coming from behind to beat Glenn for homecoming. *Watching Leyton Czarnecki play in the North All-Star game at Anderson University. *Winning football sectionals in 2017 and 2021. *Breaking out the new black jerseys against Glenn. *Coaching in the North/South All-Star game. *Winning the conference title in OT against North Judson. *Completing an undefeated regular season. *Coaching with exceptional assistant coaches." In closing, we asked Hostrawser about what is ahead for him. "I plan on doing some things I've always wanted to do but could not commit the time. Things such as gardening, constructing and tending to a fruit tree orchard and broadening my cooking/grilling knowledge. I will also do some travelling with my wife." Enjoy retirement, coach!
