LAKEVILLE - LaVille battled Class 2A #11 Bremen until a crucial point in the third quarter ultimately decided the final outcome in the opening night of the IHSAA LaVille Sectional at Dale E Cox Gymnasium. Coach Michael Edison's Lancers fought back from a 22-14 halftime deficit to pull within 26-22 at the 3:06 mark of the third quarter. Bremen coach Matt Miller called a timeout to try and interrupt LaVille's momentum and proceeded to go on a 10-0 run. That late quarter burst turned out to be the difference as the Lions defeated LHS 55-35 and secured a spot in Friday's semifinal round. "We played decent enough to keep it close with 3 minutes before the end of the 3rd quarter," said Edison of Bremen's third period blitz. "But we fell apart a little bit and could not get traction to stay in it." According to Edison, #24 Chase Devine was the major cog in the elimination of the Lancers in the state playoffs. "The biggest difference in the game was Chase Devine," explained the LaVille coach. "We could not contain him and we had trouble scoring the basketball." Devine played a crucial role in the decisive run for the Lions. The 6'-2" junior started with a 3-pointer immediately following the timeout. Then was on the receiving end of an assist from Espen Simpson, then helped close out the 10-0 run with his second trey of the quarter to grab back any momentum left for LaVille. "Even though we came up short I still feel like this team had it in them to beat a solid team like Bremen," noted Coach Edison. "We just couldn't quite get over the hump and I feel really bad for the guys because I really wanted it for them." Devine led all scorers with 28 points, including 18 in the second half. Riley Tener played a big part in a strong start for the Lions. The 6'-5" junior scored nine of his 14 points in the first quarter to help BHS to a 14-9 lead. He also helped finish off a solid lead for Bremen by hitting five of six at the free throw line in the final quarter. Lance Edison led LaVille with 16 points. Unfortunately no other player scored more than five points for LHS. Braedyn Foster had five points and nine rebounds. Ryan Maenhout added four points and six boards, and Andre Gonzales chipped in four points, three assists, and four steals. Aaron Keb came off the bench to add two points. Foster, Maenhout, Gonzales, and Keb are all seniors for LaVille. "I am really going to miss this group of seniors," closed Coach Edison of the seniors on the team. "All four of them worked extremely hard and put a lot of time and effort into this season. It was a very emotional night after the game last night as it is always tough to say goodbye to good people who I become super close with." LaVille finishes the season at 14-11 overall.
