LAKEVILLE - As LaVille Lady Hoops played host to South Bend Riley in a non-conference game Wednesday night, there were multiple story lines, especially in the final quarter. LaVille couldn't have written the ending any better in a thrilling 47-45 victory at Dale E. Cox Gymnasium. "I thought we handled the pressure and matched the physicality of Riley," said LaVille coach Nicholas Amor. "Ava did a great job getting us into our offense and our pressure at the end of the game aided in our ability to get back in it." Trailing 29-25 heading into the fourth quarter, LaVille senior Ava Weil hit a trey to close to within 31-30. Riley followed by hitting a pair of 3-pointers to give RHS a 37-30 lead. That is when the Lakeville hosts begin their comeback. And it all started with defense. Weil started the 15-5 run with a bucket, followed by a Lancer steal and subsequent basket by Madi Singleton. "Madi and Faith did great getting deflections and that led to opportunities to score," Amor said of the pressure defense. "We attacked their pressure rather than folding to it." The LaVille senior point guard Weil scored the next five points for coach Amor's club, including a 3-pointer. LHS continued its defensive pressure, forcing four straight steals and responded with points. Denni Markin calmly sank two free throws with 57.7 left to put the Lancers up, 45-42. A basket by Wildcat forward Tinajay Summers scored on an offensive putback with under 30 seconds left, and the margin was 45-44. As the clock ran down, Riley was forced to foul, sending Weil to the charity stripe for what ended up being the game-winning points. With ice water in her veins, the senior guard confidently swished two tosses for a three-point LaVille lead. The Wildcats had one final opportunity to tie or take the lead. LaVille fouled Riley in the act of shooting. Ivory made the first free throw attempt. Then following the Wildcats final timeout, Ivory intentionally missed the free throw. After a long rebound to Riley, Jenessa Peich grabbed the long missed free throw and put up a shot that banked off the glass, caromed off the rim and into the hands of Markin as time expired. Ava Weil led LaVille with 16 points, tying her career high from December 2 against Triton. Denni Markin had 11, Faith Mejer 10, and Madi Singleton 8 in a valiant effort both offensively and defensively. Singleton tied her career high of 8 during the season-opener on November 6 at Plymouth. "The game was won at the free throw line and down the stretch Faith, Denni, and Ava were clutch," explained Amor. "There’s nothing better than a team win, and balanced scoring shows how much of a team win it was. Proud of the girls and their effort!" LaVille (4-10) returns to action December 18 against Culver Academy. The junior varsity game is set for a 6pm tip, with the varsity to follow.
